In the first half of 2006, there were 265 complaints to the Fair Gaming Advocate in the London offices of the eCommerce and Online Gaming Regulation and Assurance (eCOGRA).
eCOGRA certifies almost 150 online casinos and poker rooms which, collectively, serves hundreds of millions of online gamblers in the first six months of the year. The first surprising thing about the eCOGRA report is that the total number of disputes were so low, considering the numbers of transactions processed by online casinos and poker rooms with the eCOGRA ‘Play It Safe’ Seal of Approval.
eCOGRA is a non-profit player protection body which regulates online casino behavior and intervenes in disputes between 32 Vegas online casinos and their players through the Fair Gaming Advocate mediation service.
The report stated that 83 (31%) of the total disputes concerned online casinos which are not eCOGRA-accredited and therefore outside the FGA’s authority. A further 35 complaints (14%) were non-specific rants and statements that could not be followed up.
The remaining 147 disputes were intensively investigated by the FGA team. 31% of these were resolved in favor of the player. Disputes were attributable to one of these areas:
Cash-in disputes: 75 (51%) – up from 38% in the same period last year.
Bonus disputes: 41 (28%) – down from 32% last year.
Account disputes: 23 (16%) – no change from last year.
Miscellaneous: 8 (5%) – down from 14% last year.
The FGA received an average of ten disputes per week in the first half of 2006, a slight increase over the same period last year. But the average number of disputes per ‘Play It Safe’ Seal site per month was only 0.3%, down from 0.7% last year.
Tex Rees commented in her report: “Given the major increase in the number of “Play It Safe” sites since last year – there are now 106 sites accredited by eCOGRA – the level of disputes coming in to my office remains remarkably low.
These are all very large online gambling casinos and poker rooms, dealing with high levels of player transactions on a wide variety of games. In 31 percent of cases I found for the player, which represents a very small fault margin in terms of operational activity.”
